This Website contains the data gathered from a 3 year study on State of the Environment (SOE) and State of the Community (SOC) Reporting conducted by Virginia Maclaren from the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto. The study was funded by SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanties Research Council).
A telephone survey of 157 Canadian municipalities in 1998 and a follow-up survey in 2000 identified 70 locally produced indicator reports. This database contains summaries of each of those reports and a list of the 925 indicators found in them. Graphs summarize trends in the content and structure of the reports, including their scope, purpose, target audience, type of lead organization, organizational and spatial frameworks, level of public involvement, use of targets, use of selection criteria, and presence of recommendations.
Adobe Acrobat is required to view the information in the database which is presented in PDF files.

We hope that this website will aid people and community groups involved in creating SOERs and SOCRs in choosing a structure and developing indicators for their report, as well as aiding those who have created reports in the past to see where their report fits in the Canadian context. It is our hope that this website may help create links between groups working on such reports, to share ideas and resources.
